Tristan had his first Occupational Therapist (OT) and Speech Therapist (ST) visits today. Martin was the OT and he worked with Tristan on some leg exercises and got him set up to use the wrist crutches we rented. This was really helpful because it allowed Tristan the ability to go up and down the first flight of stairs, which he did amazingly well at despite his leg pain.
Martin also offered suggestions on better shower chairs, and we removed the glass shower doors in anticipation of Tristan making it upstairs in the near future. I’ll be picking up a rod and shower curtain tomorrow, and the shower bench should be here Thursday, so he may be able to get his first shower Friday or Saturday. I can only imagine how good that will feel for him!
Vivian was his ST and she did a full cognitive test on him today. There were several different memory, matching, and drawing tests and Tristan did really well overall. Vivian mentioned that after reading his medical report in preparation for her visit with him she was really concerned about the state he was going to be in. She was very surprised to see both how good he looked and how well he did on the tests. She’ll have to score his tests and will provide the results next week, but she didn’t feel there was any “homework” she could give him considering how well he did. This was wonderful to hear and we’re guessing that next week’s visit will probably be our last with her, which is very encouraging.
Between eggs, peaches, avocado, a smoothie, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, salmon, rice, and Graham crackers we were able to satisfy both his hunger and his stomach today. We were also able to open the windows this afternoon and enjoy the warm fresh air. So many wins today!
Tomorrow we head to Seattle for his appointment at the Harborview Eye Institute. Hopefully the sun will be out and the windows will be down!
